Bed in a Bag, and Bathroom Décor

BedroomWelcome to bedbathtable.com. Here you’ll find some great ideas about design choices for bed and bath and simple, less expensive ways to upgrade a boring room in the house into the bed or bathroom of your dreams.

If you are the DIY type, the basic elements of design are a good place to start planning any remodel. Unity, balance, harmony, contrast, rhythm, pattern, variety, focal point, scale, functionality, artistic unity, genuineness in media and form, and proximity are all principals of design.

Professional designers use these principals to create unforgettable spaces. Plenty of DIY designers don’t know anything about these terms though and also create amazing spaces just using their natural eye and creativity. Since most of us aren’t born with innate design ability, just knowing a little about these concepts can go a long way in your own home.

Unity means using an element of the same design in two different and/or adjoining rooms. Two rooms can be given unity by having the same crown moulding. Balance can be found by using volume, color and location of objects and has to do with symmetry or the lack thereof.

Harmony can be described as a delicate balance between unity and variety. Harmony is definitely an abstract concept, but you know it when you see it because it makes you feel comfortable and at-home.

Contrast is generally achieved through color, size and/or surface and the goal of contrast is to draw the eye in to the chosen focal point of the room. The focal point is a traditional starting place for a lot of design principals. Designers find that discovering a focal point is key to defining frame of reference for the rest of the design.

Rhythm, pattern and variety use recurring forms (lines, shapes, colors, values) to achieve unity and to reduce the appearance of randomness. You can incoporate all elements into your scheme; from your bathroom vanity top to floor mats.

Using any or all of these principals does happen sometimes even if you’re not quite sure what you’re doing. A great example of this is finding a kitchen you love in a photo in a magazine. Even if you’re not quite sure why you like it so much, you can tell there’s something special there. Mimicking the photo will probably produce a combination of all the principals of design. Obviously there are bragging rights associated with coming up with and implementing your very own original design, but that’s not always realistic.
